Not later than 90 days after the date of enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Commerce, in consultation with the Chair of the National Science and Technology Council Committee on STEM Education, shall conduct a study of the current and projected state of the Nation's available STEM workforce. The study shall include— an assessment of demands for and the availability of STEM professionals within the U.S. workforce, currently and as projected over the next decade, with data categorized by industry or industry sector, as practicable; an assessment of the availability of STEM professionals within the U.S. workforce, currently and as projected over the next decade, as required to meet the demand for STEM professionals within industry, academia, and the Federal Government; an assessment of the most common STEM-skill requirements within industry, academia, and the Federal Government, currently and as projected over the next decade; an identification of— the STEM skills that are most needed in the current and projected available STEM workforce; and the industries or industry sectors most likely to be affected, over the next decade, by the needs identified under clause (i); and priorities for STEM training, as informed by the assessments and identifications under this section.
The study shall draw on previous data collection and reports related to STEM workforce needs in the United States, as appropriate. Not later than 540 days after the date enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Commerce shall report to the appropriate committees of Congress the findings of the study, including any recommendations to update the Federal 5-year STEM education strategic plan to develop the available STEM workforce based on the assessment under this subsection. Section 303 of the America COMPETES Reauthorization Act of 2010 ( 33 U.S.C. 893c ) is repealed.
