Sec. 1048. Prohibition on reduction of force structure at Lajes Air Force Base until completion of assessments by Secretary of Defense and Government Accountability Office

The Secretary of the Air Force may not reduce the force structure at Lajes Air Force Base, Azores, Portugal, below the force structure at such Air Force Base as of October 1, 2013, until 30 days after the following occur: The Secretary of Defense concludes the European Infrastructure Consolidation Assessment initiated by the Secretary on January 25, 2013. The Secretary briefs the congressional defense committees regarding such Assessment, including a specific assessment of the efficacy of Lajes Air Force Base in supporting the United States overseas force posture.
The Comptroller General of the United States reviews and validates the results of such Assessment and conducts an independent assessment of the possible operational capabilities of Lajes Air Force Base.
