Section 464R(a) of the Public Health Service Act ( 42 U.S.C. 285p(a) ) is amended by inserting serious mental illness research, after biomedical and behavioral research, . Section 464R(b) of the Public Health Service Act ( 42 U.S.C. 285p(b) ) is amended— by striking The research program and inserting the following: The research program ; by striking to further the treatment and prevention of mental illness and inserting to further the treatment and prevention of mental illness (including serious mental illness) ; and by adding at the end the following:
As part of the research program established under this subpart, the Director of the Institute shall conduct or support research on serious mental illness, including with respect to— the causes, prevention, and treatment of serious mental illness; and interventions to improve early identification of individuals with serious mental illness and referral of such individuals to mental health professionals for treatment. . Section 403(a)(5) of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S.C. 283(a)(5)) is amended— by redesignating subparagraph
(L)as subparagraph (M); and by inserting after subparagraph
(K)the following: Serious mental illness. .
