Sec. 268. Canines as stand-off detection of explosives and explosive precursors

Not later than 90 days after the date of enactment of this Act, the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics shall provide to the Committee on Armed Services of the House of Representatives and the Committee on Armed Services of the Senate a report that— describes how the Department of Defense intends to maintain the capability and infrastructure required to support canines as stand-off detection of explosives and explosive precursors; specifies the appropriate office to oversee the acquisition process, research and development, technology advancement, testing and evaluation, and production and procurement with respect to canines as stand-off detection of explosives and explosive precursors; specifies the plan to sustain and enhance the partnerships and relationships of the Department of Defense with service laboratories, private sector companies, and academic institutions to ensure that the latest data and information regarding canine capabilities are distributed throughout the Department and other Federal agencies that could benefit from such information; and specifies any technologies capable of replacing the canine as a stand-off detection capability during the next 2 years.
