Sec. 304. Acquisition of publically owned land and conversion to urban farms and community gardens

In this section: The term food desert has the meaning given the term underserved community in section 25(a)(3) of the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 (7 U.S.C. 2034(a)(3)). The term community land trust means a community housing development organization, as such term is defined in section 104(6) of the Cranston-Gonzalez National Affordable Housing Act ( 42 U.S.C. 12704(6) ), except that the requirements under subparagraphs
(C)and
(D)of such section shall not apply for purposes of this section. The Secretary of Agriculture shall make competitive grants to nonprofit organizations, including community land trusts, to assist the organizations— to purchase publically owned land in a food desert; and to convert the land for use as an urban farm or community garden for the production of affordable, nutritious foods. As a condition of receiving a grant under this section, the nonprofit organization shall provide an amount of funds equal to not less than the amount of the grant. There is authorized to be appropriated to the Secretary of Agriculture such amounts as may be necessary to carry out this section.
