Sec. 1705. Office of Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment

There is established, within the United States Agency for International Development, an Office of Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (referred to in this section as the Office ). The Office shall be headed by a Director (referred to in this section as the Director ), who shall be highly qualified in matters relating to international development and gender integration. The Director shall report directly to the Administrator and consult regularly with the Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues.
The Director shall— advise the Administrator on matters relating to the advancement of women’s global development; lead and coordinate all efforts of the United States Agency for International Development to empower women and promote gender equality in developing countries, including efforts to prevent and respond to gender-based violence; direct the preparation of the Global Strategy for Gender Equality under section 1703; mainstream into the design, implementation, and evaluation of policies and programs at all levels an understanding of the distinctive impact that such policies and programs may have on women and girls; assist other bureaus, offices, and overseas missions in designing and revising strategies, programs, projects and activities to empower women and promote gender equality; monitor and evaluate the impact on women and girls of programs carried out by USAID; and disseminate information about lessons learned and best practices for advancing women’s global development throughout USAID and other relevant Federal agencies.
