CHAP. 1197.— An act to amend section forty-four hundred and seventy-four of the Revised Statutes of the United States.October 18, 1888. *Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled*,Petroleum as fuel.[R. S., sec. 4474, p. 866, amended](/us/rs/s4474/p866). That section forty-four hundred and seventy-four of the Revised Statutes of the United States be, and the same is hereby, amended, by adding thereto the Petroleum may be used on steamers not carrying passengers, without certificatefollowing:
“*Provided, however*, That the Secretary of the Treasury may permit the use of petroleum as fuel on steamers not carrying passengers, without the certificate of the Supervising Inspector of the district where the vessel is to be used, subject to such conditions and safeguards as the Secretary of the Treasury in his judgment Conditions.shall provide. For a violation of any of the conditions imposed by the Secretary of the Treasury a penalty of five hundred dollars shall be imposed, which penalty shall be a lien upon the vessel, but a bond may, as provided m other cases, be given to secure the satisfaction of the judgment.
