(a)In this Section:

"CMV" means cytomegalovirus.

"Health care professional and provider" means any physician, advanced practice

registered nurse, physician assistant, hospital facility, or other person that is licensed or otherwise authorized to deliver health care services.

(b)The Department shall develop or approve and publish informational materials for women who may become pregnant, expectant parents, and parents of infants regarding:

(1)the incidence of CMV;

(2)the transmission of CMV to pregnant women and women who may become pregnant;

(3)birth defects caused by congenital CMV;

(4)methods of diagnosing congenital CMV; and

(5)available preventive measures to avoid the infection of women who are pregnant or

may become pregnant.

(c)The Department shall publish the information required under subsection

(b)on its Internet website.

(d)The Department shall publish information to:

(1)educate women who may become pregnant, expectant parents, and parents of infants

about CMV; and

(2)raise awareness of CMV among health care professionals and providers who provide

care to expectant mothers or infants.

(e)The Department may solicit and accept the assistance of any relevant health care professional associations or community resources, including faith-based resources, to promote education about CMV under this Section.

(f)If a newborn infant fails the 2 initial hearing screenings in the hospital, then the hospital performing that screening shall provide to the parents of the newborn infant information regarding:

(i)birth defects caused by congenital CMV;

(ii)testing opportunities and options for CMV, including the opportunity to test for CMV before leaving the hospital; and

(iii)early intervention services. Health care professionals and providers may, but are not required to, use the materials developed by the Department for distribution to parents of newborn infants.
