Subtitle A of title II of the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act of 1996 ( 25 U.S.C. 4131 et seq. ) is amended by adding at the end the following new section: Notwithstanding section 106(g)(1) of the Housing and Urban Development Act of 1968 ( 12 U.S.C. 1701x(g)(1) ), Indian Tribes, Tribal organizations, tribally designated housing entities and the Department of Hawaiian Homelands carrying out homeownership counseling or rental housing counseling under section 105(a)(20) of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 ( 42 U.S.C. 5305(a)(20) ) and sections 202(3) and 810(b)(2)(A) of the Native American Housing and Self-Determination Act of 1996 ( 25 U.S.C. 4132(3) , 4229(b)(2)(A)), may not be required to comply with any housing counseling certification requirements established by the Secretary.
Nothing in this provision shall be construed as limiting such recipients’ ability to obtain a housing counseling certification from the Secretary. .
