Notwithstanding sections 8336(c) and 8412(d) of title 5, United States Code, not later than May 1, 2024, the Secretary concerned, in coordination with the Secretary of Labor, shall promulgate regulations, as necessary, to ensure that a Federal wildland firefighter would not forfeit previously made contributions or eligibility for firefighter retirement when the wildland firefighter has a voluntary break in service of not more than 9 months.
