The Comptroller General of the United States shall conduct a study on the public health workforce in the United States during the COVID–19 pandemic. The study under subsection
(a)shall address— existing gaps in the Federal, State, local, Tribal, and territorial public health workforce, including— epidemiological and disease intervention specialists needed during the pandemic for contact tracing, laboratory technicians necessary for testing, community health workers for community supports and services, and other staff necessary for contact tracing, testing, or surveillance activities; and other personnel needed during the COVID–19 pandemic; challenges associated with the hiring, recruitment, and retention of the Federal, State, local, Tribal, and territorial public health workforce; and recommended steps the Federal Government should take to improve hiring, recruitment, and retention of the public health workforce. Not later than December 1, 2021, the Comptroller General shall submit to the Congress a report on the findings of the study conducted under this section.
