The Secretary of Defense, with the concurrence of the Secretary, shall provide assistance to U.S. Customs and Border Protection for purposes of increasing ongoing efforts to secure the southern border. The assistance provided under subsection
(a)may include— deployment of manned aircraft, unmanned aerial surveillance systems, and ground-based surveillance systems to support continuous surveillance of the southern border; and intelligence analysis support. The Secretary of Defense may deploy such materiel, equipment, and logistics support as may be necessary to ensure the effectiveness of the assistance provided under subsection (a). There are authorized to be appropriated for the Department of Defense $75,000,000 to provide assistance under this section. The Secretary of Defense may not seek reimbursement from the Secretary for any assistance provided under this section. Not later than 90 days after the date of the enactment of this Act and annually thereafter, the Secretary of Defense shall submit a report to the appropriate congressional defense committees (as defined in section 101(a)(16) of title 10, United States Code) regarding any assistance provided under subsection
(a)during the period specified in paragraph (3). Each report under paragraph
(1)shall include, for the period specified in paragraph (3), a description of— the assistance provided; the sources and amounts of funds used to provide such assistance; and the amounts obligated to provide such assistance. The period specified in this paragraph is— in the case of the first report required under paragraph (1), the 90-day period beginning on the date of the enactment of this Act; and in the case of any subsequent report submitted under paragraph (1), the calendar year for which the report is submitted.
