The Act of October 15, 1940 ( 33 U.S.C. 701h–1 ), is amended— in the first sentence— by striking Whenever any and inserting the following: Whenever any ; by striking a flood-control project duly adopted and authorized by law and inserting an authorized water resources development study or project, ; and by striking such work and inserting such study or project ; in the second sentence— by striking The Secretary of the Army and inserting the following: The Secretary of the Army ; and by striking from appropriations which may be provided by Congress for flood-control work and inserting if specific appropriations are provided by Congress for such purpose ; and by adding at the end the following:
In this section, the term State means— a State; the District of Columbia; the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico; any other territory or possession of the United States; and a federally recognized Indian tribe or a Native village, Regional Corporation, or Village Corporation (as those terms are defined in section 3 of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act ( 43 U.S.C. 1602 )). .
