Section 402A(a) of the Public Health Service Act ( 42 U.S.C. 282a(a) ) is amended by adding at the end the following: In addition to amounts made available pursuant to paragraphs
(1)and (2), there are authorized to be appropriated to the National Institute of Mental Health for the purpose described in subparagraph (B)(ii) $40,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2017 through 2021. Amounts appropriated pursuant to subparagraph
(A)shall be used exclusively for the purpose of conducting or supporting— research on the determinants of self- and other directed-violence in mental illness, including studies directed at the causes of such violence and at intervention to reduce the risk of self harm, suicide, and interpersonal violence; or brain research through the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies Initiative. .
